Heart Rate Data Results:  Step Test

Pre-Test on October 7, 2010 and Post-Test on May 5, 2011

Students recorded heart rate data which included resting, maximum exertion, 30-second recovery, and perceived exertion rates.  In comparing the 30-second recovery rates from our pre and post testing, we saw little to no significant change with the exception of the girls in grades nine and ten, who showed a significant decrease.  However, these results may not be a true indication of performance.  We believe these results were skewed due to the instructors inadvertently giving the students a minimum heart rate goal of 146 for their maximum heart rate.  As you can see from the results, the ninth and tenth grade girl’s average heart rate was 146.

Grade 7 Boys:  The 30-second recovery heart rate for the pre-test was 127.  The 30-second recovery heart rate for the post-test was 127.  There was zero change in the 30-second recovery rate from pre to post-test.

Grade 7 Girls:  The 30-second recovery heart rate for the pre-test was 126.  The 30-second recovery heart rate for the post-test was 128.  There was a 2 point change in the 30-second recovery rate from pre to post-test.

Grade 8 Boys:  The 30-second recovery heart rate for the pre-test was 124. The 30-second recovery heart rate for the post-test was 124.  There was zero change in the 30-second recovery rate from pre to post-test.

Grade 8 Girls:  The 30-second recovery heart rate for the pre-test was 122.  The 30-second recovery heart rate for the post-test was 121.  There was a 1 point change in the 30-second recovery rate from pre to post-test.

Grade 9 Boys:  The 30-second recovery heart rate for the pre-test was 113.  The 30-second recovery heart rate for the post-test was 111.  There was a 2 point change in the 30-second recovery rate from pre to post-test.

Grade 9 Girls:   The 30-second recovery heart rate for the pre-test was 136.  The 30-second recovery heart rate for post-test was 105.  There was a 31 point change in the 30-second recovery rate from pre to post-test (see note above).
